Exercises and Resources for Further Reflection and Discussion

Perfect City, a project developed by Aaron Landsman collaboratively with community member, provides a perfect counterpoint to Rousseau's argument against the theater, demonstrating a way that the theater can advance the interests of cities and citizens.

Sustainable citizenship:  citizens work together to sustain a small town by revitalizing its theater.  Click on the photo to the right to learn the story of the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock, PA.  You just need to read the page giving the background on the theater--but you're welcome to explore the site if you're interested.  This case would seem to make a case for the merits of a theater in a small town/city.  How might Rousseau respond?

For an alternative model of how theater productions might help shape a sense of citizenship and civic life, you might also look at the Laramie Project materials on this site.
